The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families' Chief Executive elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medical Sciences

In a ceremony held on Wednesday 2nd July, Professor Fonagy was praised for his outstanding contribution to medical sciences and was formally admitted to the Academy.

He was recognised for his research into psychological therapies for mental health problems and into the role of attachment in human development, and for the development and evaluation of Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) for patients with borderline personality disorder.

The Royal Academy selects candidates for their outstanding contribution to the advancement of medical science, or for the application of existing scientific knowledge or understanding in an innovative way that has brought about advances in human health and welfare.
