Anna Freud responds to recent violence across the UK

We respond to the killing and injuring of children in Southport on Monday 29 July and the violent, racist and Islamophobic riots that have followed.

Events over the past week have been deeply upsetting; from the killing of three children and injuring of others in Southport, to the violent, racist and Islamophobic riots that have subsequently spread following misinformation shared by far-right groups.

There is no place for incidents like this in our society. We are extremely concerned about the damaging impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, who may be exposed to even more racist rhetoric on social media or in-person as a result of the riots. We stand firmly against racism and Islamophobia and offer our solidarity to those communities impacted.

Our thoughts are with all children, families and communities affected by these acts of violence. It is vital those impacted receive support to help them following these senseless and horrific acts.

Access our resources to support the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, to help them cope at this difficult time.
